The friended musical families living in Nesodden started playing concerts together in southern Norway in 1996. Stephen Ackles, renowned Norwegian vocalist, pianist and songwriter joined them in 2003.
Here will you find some photos and excerpts from reviews in local papers from the concerts those years.
All found on the website of Thomas Stanghelle.

In 2007, they invited Hanne Krogh  the popular MGP-artist to join. Find more about those special summershows HERE

We have looked through the archives for photos of the MGP/Eurovision hero Alexander Rybak. In 1997, Rybak and Thomas Stanghelle have a summer concert in Spind, and the local newspaper's journalist scored with her predictions perfectly:
- Alexander Rybak (11) is a name one should one should mark one-self for the future, noted she. She told like "the foreseeing"!
Last Saturday, the fiddler narrowed down Nesodden to with Norway's third victory in Eurovision Song Contest. Top points streamed in from all over Europe, and Alexander Rybak collected incredible 387 points. Norway's new star has charmed whole Europe, and layed the foundation of his stage charm and art among other things in our district. MIDTEN

You can get tuned for Christmas also like this...

Text and photo: Øyvind Futsæter | Published: in amta.no | 22.12.2003 | excerpts

- This kind of arrangement would I join every day, the whole year, saw Stepchen Ackles to the congregation that filled mission church in Alværn to well beyond the brink of its capacity Sunday afternoon.
Together with Thomas and Turid Stanghelle, Alexander, Natasha and Igor Rybak and the mission church's own children's choir he created a pre-Christmas mood that is still in the bones of those were present.

Stephen Ackles who might be known from other genres than Christmas songs and gospel, told that he got to know Nesodden's promising pop-artist and tenor Thomas Stanghelle at a cabin trip one year ago. Then they have found so many common songs they liked that they had decided to collaborate. In Summer the same group had a summer concert in Southern Norway and that probably convinced to continue collaboration in future. "We're getting tuned for Christmas" of Sunday in Mission Church showed to the fullest that this what the public wish as well.

In festive mood
The children's choir opened the concert with an atmospharic performance of a Christmas gospel by reading and singing.
The whole congregation also sang some traditional Christmas songs, but otherwise the programme was highlighted by a tremendous mix of classical gems, gospel-like songs and own compositions of the families Rybak and Stanghelle, together with Stephen Ackles. So it ended up with a quite different way of getting tuned for Christmas, but that delivered a not less festive and touching atmosphere.

The whole group started with "O helga natt" together, thus the level was set on an interesting common singing of the more classical singer Thomas and Turid Stanghelle, and Stephen Ackles' characteristic country-gospel style. Igor and Alexander Rybak accompanied on violin and Natasha Rybak played the piano. [...] The following violin duet of father and son Rybak was not less impressive.
[...]
Polyphonic common performance
After showing international class with their violin play, Igor, Natasha and Alexander Rybak surprised when taking part for the first time in the polyphonic common singing, and Alexander even performed "His eye is on the sparrow" brilliantly and vividly. With the Rybak family, Nesodden really has artists of a high and universal class.
[...]
The closing performance of the whole ensemble and children's choir was the pwerful song "Den hellige stad" where also Turid's 85 years-old mother Mathilde  Marker sang solo on the first verse with clear and distinctive voice, thus demonstrated that three generations took part in this concert that became quite different from a usual Christmas concert. Endless feet stomping and ovation showed that Per Noreng pastor and leader could ascertain with good conscience that everyone seemed to have received some important and good to leave with this afternoon. Also Stepchen Ackles was not less pleased.
- So many strong impressions at once, so in order I am capable to take in it all, now I need to go home and digest this in peace and quiet.
But one is sure: further musical collaboration between him and the families Rybak and Stanghelle from Nesodden should continue.

Classical Christmas-friends
It proved to a good idea to be called by Stephen Ackles the Christmas concert "Christmas cross over" of Saturday.

With a bunch of classical music-friends and the programme "Christmas cross over" put Stephen Ackles Langesund in  Christmas mood yesterday.

And that Ackles to met the tenor singer Thomas Stanghelle on a cabin trip a few years ago, can hardly have been accidental. In any case, fortunately, they did not end with singing together at the after-party.

The meeting has led to a productive collaboration - both in Summer and Winter, and on Saturday, 200 people came to Langesund church to experience the result their meeting ended with.

Great team work
Mezzosoprano Turid Stanghelle, violinist Alexander Rybak, every  possible    musician Stephen Ackles and teno singer Thomas Stanghelle gave the publicum a fantastic concert in Langesund church on Saturday.

Family concert
The original Christmas concert started with some familiar and beloved Christmas songs, among other things "O helga natt", but eventually continued with German songs and classical gems from Russia, too...
Becuse in addition to the two cabin mates was Thomas' mother, the mezzosoprano Turid Stanghelle participated. The Rybak family was also on stage:  Natasha, Igor and Alexander, mother, father and son.
The Rybak family is originally from Belarus, but now living on Nesodden. 18 years old Alexander impressed the viewers with his talented play and beautiful singing.
 - He is so talented that he newly got Anders Jahres music award of 100.000 kroner, Ackles told.

More than Christmas
Ackles let his friends represent themselves with their own genres, and so became the Christmas concert much more than a usual Christmas concert. But by putting Christmas songs between in classical pieces, the audience got reminded that it is Christmas in a few days.
Amongst other things, the musical friends offered a funny medley put together of popular american Christmas songs á la "Jingle Bells".
- It is fun for them to make some not classical, Ackles joked, who indeed put the publicum in good mood with his humorous comments.

World-class concert

Jærbladet | 18.7.2005
The concert at Hå old vicarage on the 14th July, with Thomas Stanghelle, Turid Stanghelle, Alexander Rybak and Stephen Ackles was a great musical experience.
The old barn was overloaded and one had to set chairs in the hallways outside the hall. There were in total 175 thrilled viewers.

Thomas Stanghelle performed the main track from the opera-musical "Some Sunny Night" where he sang among other things "Angel of Life". His mother, Turid Stanghelle also took part in the musical, as the mother of Mark Wang, a 12-year-old Chinese guy who survived a plane crash, but became paralyzed.
With the help of Queen Sonja, he got to come to Norway and Sunnås hospital, where he persistently trained up for a better life. At Sunnås hospital he met Ketil Moe from Lillesand. This story became a great and touching musical by Thomas Stanghelle's hand.
Besides songs from the musical and other classical gems, we could hear gospel-songs by Stephen Ackles. "Take my hand, precious Lord" and "Amazing grace", to name a few.
[...]
The 19-year-old violinist Alexander Rybak also impressed a lot. He is playing the violin at a world-class level, so we have here a great successor of Arve Tellefsen!
He lifted us to the heights as he played Hungarian Rapsody (it was probably Hungarian Suite - t.n.).

The concert was bound together and led by Stephen Ackles in a relaxing way and with a good sense of humor. He made laugh both the audience and the artists.[...]
